Vacationers Don’t Throw Your Food Away! Support Friends Feeding Friends – Topsail Island

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]
Friends Feeding Friends – Topsail kicked off this past Saturday June 21, 2014.   F3, (the shortened version of the name) is an effort to stock the local food pantry by accepting donations of food from vacationers departing the island after a week’s stay.
If you do not have leftovers from your vacation week, you can still participate by making a monetary donation.

Participation isn’t confined to vacationers either.   Locals are asked to throw a few extra items in their grocery cart for donation to the pantry as well.  It would be wonderful to have participation by our local merchants and citizens.

The first delivery of food on our kickoff day this past Saturday, was generously donated by Jeff and Sherry Price of The Beach Shop Grille, who donated almost 300 lbs of food to the cause.
Thank you Jeff and Sherry!  We hope other restaurants in the area will emulate your efforts!

We are accepting any leftover perishable or non-perishable foods, paper products, detergents, and diapers.  The perishable foods can be used to cook meals for the local Sunday night soup kitchen.

Volunteers will be ready with trucks and cars to receive the items and drive them to the local pantry.  Look for the signs along the road leading to the swing bridge and once you see the Max’s Pizza sign prepare to pull through the parking lot on the right.  Look for the bright yellow shirts!  It’s a quick and easy off and on to drop off your donations!

We would like to recognize our first individual food donor,   Ann McCoullough of Ontario Canadia.  Ann was not leaving the island, but wanted to show her support by dropping off items for the pantry.  Another donor saw F3’s signs on the way to the grocery store and picked up extra items to donate to the cause as well.

350 lbs of food was collected our 1st week!

If vacationing on Topsail Island put F3 on your calendar and drop off food any Saturday until Labor Day weekend!

How Friends Feeding Friends Got Started
Friends Feeding Friends is an effort spear-headed by Julia Sherron, Frank Sherron and Bryant Mende.  Bryant was impressed by an article he read in the Charlotte Observer about Charlotte native, Bill Spiers who had started a food collection program at Holden Beach called “A Second Helping.”  One day while on visiting on the beach, Bryant told the Sherrons about Spiers and the trio decided to launch the program on Topsail Island Summer 2014.    Emma Anderson Memorial Church graciously agreed to support the program as an outreach ministry in the local community.

We are grateful for the vision of Bill Spiers and his tireless efforts to start “A Second Helping” on Holden Beach. Click here for details of drop offs at Holden Beach.  Thanks to his vision there are now three beaches participating in this program.  There is a “A Second Helping” at Emerald Isle Beach as well.  Click here for details for drop offs at Emerald Isle.We hope more beaches will adopt this effort to banish waste and feed the hungry.

Cash donations gratefully accepted. For each dollar received, we can buy approximately 5 and 8 lbs. of food.
100% of these donations are used to buy more food.

Make sure to dine at Max’s Pizza in Surf City, NC and The Beach Shop Grill  South Topsail Beach while on Topsail Island.  Max’s has great pizza, subs and more.  The Beach Shop Grill will rival any metropolitan city’s leading restaurants with the freshest seafood, great entrees, great bar and impeccable service.  We are lucky to have such great restaurant options on Topsail Island, which are owned by such genuinely nice people.

Friends Feeding Friends is an outreach which supports Share the Table Food Pantry.  F3 runs from June 21- August 30 (Labor Day Weekend), but Share The Table Food Pantry is open all year long.  Food may be donated to Share The Pantry anytime of the year.

In addition to food collection, cash donations are accepted.  Checks can be made to:  Emma Anderson Memorial Chapel/F3.

Thank you for choosing to vacation on Topsail Island and for your consideration to donate food and/or cash for those in need.
