I am sure you have seen this photograph of Los Angeles Interior Designer, Windsor Smith’s home in magazines or on Pinterest or blogs. The clean crisp white walls with pops of Hermes orange, the simple lines of the framed print with the more ornate gold console adds up to sheer elegance. Who was Mark Shaw….

Mark Shaw was a well known celebrity and fashion photographer in the 1950’s and 60’s. Mr. Shaw began his career with Harpers Bazaar, but also worked as a freelance photographer for Life Magazine. Best known for his photographs of the Kennedy’s. He became their family photographer. As a freelance photographer, Mr Shaw owned the rights to his photographs. Shaw became a close family friend to the Kennedy’s he was invited to Hyannis Port and the White House to photograph the family. There are so many up close, intimate and personal photographs of the Kennedys. He published a collection of these photographs in 1964 in a book named The John F. Kennedys: A Family Album which which sold many copies. He took not only formal shots of the Kennedys but also casual ones like the one below of Jackie playing with Caroline and the family dog.

Hard to believe that some of these photographs are 50+ years old, they still look so current. Just reinforces how photograph can truly be works of art just as much as paintings and sculptures. I hope you regard these works as highly as I do. Viewing these photographs makes me want to get out my camera and start snapping photos of my own family.
It also makes one realize the importance of hiring professionals when you want a photograph for keeps!
